Extract Dispensing Booths usually operate on a recirculatory airflow principle for the weighing and dispensing of powdered products. Added to the flexibility of multiple size and construction options, the Booths can be enhanced by the integration of weighing systems and dispensary management systems, as well as vacuum lifters, drum tippers etc. Single pass airflow options are also available with ATEX certification.
The Extract Sampling Booths are self contained and designed to safeguard operators from hazardous dusts when QC sampling of incoming raw materials, whilst preventing dust egress into the surrounding environment. Often located in the warehouse, they can be designed to incorporate material and personnel airlocks as well as roller conveyors, turntables, transfer hatches etc.
Designed specifically for applications where the Downflow Booth will protect operators when they are manually or automatically charging large volumes of powdered product into hoppers, vessels, IBC's etc. These will have filtration designed to handle the heavy dust burden, but will also include custom designed charge hoppers, vacuum lifters and other associated equipment.
Glassware Containment Booths have been developed to protect personnel from hazardous dusts, vapours and aerosols during reactions, distillation and general experimental work, normally undertaken in Kilo Labs.
The airflow method ensures that the glassware equipment enclosure is maintained under negative pressure and that all vapours are effectively drawn into the exhaust plenum. Unlike traditional walk-in fume hoods, Glassware Containment Booths offer operator protection to levels as low as 10µg/m³ TWA with 100% fresh air supply.
Modular construction offers the ultimate in design flexibility, with most operations performed from outside the Booth structure.
Customers own HVAC systems can be integrated or supplied as part of the Booth package, along with hazardous area plenum mounted lighting.
Incorporating the Extract patented Flexible or Rigid Screens into a Downflow Booth ensures there is a physical barrier between the active product and the operator, thereby immediately improving the attainable containment levels. Recent tests on Booths have confirmed that levels <1µg/m³ can be achieved, depending upon the application.
The Flexible Containment Screen is a patented, cost effective solution in anti-static PVC with the number and position of the gloves dependent upon the application. Full flexibility of movement allows the operator maximum access with improved protection.
The Rigid Containment Screen in clear perspex or glass gives a 4-axis range of movement and incorporates the PharmaPort glove ports used on Extract Isolators.
Dispensing & Sampling Facilities
In many dispensing and sampling applications, the requirement is not just for the containment of the dusts generated through utilising a Downflow Booth, but for a cGMP facility incorporating airlocks, changing rooms and a range of handling devices such as drum tippers, vacuum manipulators, roller conveyor track, turntables and roller shutter doors.
Extract have designed and co-ordinated the installation of a number of these facilities, all of which have met the specific requirements of the customer. The central element of the facility is always the Booth, which is then allied to standard products from other experienced vendors, all under the project management of Extract Technology.
Rigid Containment Isolators are designed for handling potent compounds and can offer guaranteed levels of operator protection as low as 10ng/m3 (task duration). These include designs for sampling, dispensing and sub-division, mixing, milling and vessel charging, as well as containing integrated process devices such as filter dryer units, tablet press enclosures and pack off systems.
Dispensing Isolators are designed to allow the safe subdivision and weighing of active materials whilst offering guaranteed containment levels of operator protection as low as 10ng/m3 (task duration). Single chamber designs can have entry and/or exit airlocks to give a defined separation between the product and the environment when handling smaller product volumes.
Alternatively, the twin chamber Isolator is designed for bulk applications, with the second chamber housing a drum tipping mechanism that docks onto an inward inflating seal and door arrangement. Weighing system integration can also be included.
QC or Sampling Isolators are generally of a single chamber design allowing the sampling from small single drums/containers. They have similar features to the Dispensing Isolators, incorporating balances, CIP systems, Rapid Transfer Ports, bag out ports etc.
This range covers a variety of applications including Filter/Tray Dryer Isolators with built in ovens and pan filters, Milling and Sieving Isolators with integrated equipment, Charging and Mixing Isolators with built-in tanks or linked to vessels/reactors.
Occasionally an application will arise where a "special" needs to be designed. We have handled a number of these, some of which have started off life as design studies where we have proved the feasibility of the concept and the design.
This new range of Isolator products has seen Extract supply into the Pharmaceutical, Veterinary and Healthcare industries in Europe, the Far East and South Africa. With our experience in Containment Isolators, the transition to manufacturing positive pressure Aseptic Process Isolators has been seamless.
Designed to allow operators to perform sterility testing in an aseptic environment providing assurance of process integrity. It also provides a controlled means of loading and removing the processed product and waste materials from the Isolator enclosure. Fully integrated VHP systems from various suppliers are available to provide rapid decontamination.
Process & Filling Line Isolators
Providing a controlled, aseptic environment in which the manufacture of compounded products would be performed, or alternatively an environment in which any form of filling, stoppering and capping machines together with their ancillary devices would be installed. The operators would control the loading/unloading of product and/or equipment, thus providing a defined barrier between the product, the operator and the surrounding environment.
Flexible Containment Isolators provide containment standards better than can be achieved with Downflow Booth technology, and often compare favourably with a Rigid Isolator system. As well as providing high levels of operator safety, Flexible Isolators benefit from relatively short lead times and lower costs than airflow Booths or Rigid Isolator systems.
Dispensing & Sampling Isolators
These Isolators normally consist of two chambers; a dispensing chamber for manual transfer of powder product from a raw material package or container and an airlock for the product and equipment transfer. The base of the enclosure provides suitable support usually for a weigh scale, and often waste bag out ports or product discharge spigots are included on these individually designed solutions.
Designed specifically around an individual piece of process equipment, cost effective solutions have been found for applications involving fluid bed dryers, granulators, mills, tablet presses, and automated dispensing equipment. Critical to the success of these solutions are the ergonomics and glove access to allow correct product handling and machine operation.
Extract Sealing Heads are designed to offer primary dust containment when off-loading and packing off dry powdered product in the pharmaceutical or chemical industry.
Outward Inflating Head: Forms a clean and dust tight seal within the open mouth or inner surface of poly or continuous liners and also with paper or aluminium lined bags.
Inward Inflating Head: Ensuring a clean and dust tight seal as the liner (normally continuous) is compressed against the feed tube so there is no product contact with the FDA approved natural rubber seal.
Downward Inflating Head: The membrane inflates downwards to form a seal against the top of unlined drums or inlet rim of IBC's.
Moulded and compressible seals are also available if the application requires them.
Secondary containment solutions can be used in conjunction with the Pack-Off Heads to improve the overall containment level.
Horizontal Laminar Flow Booths
A "once through" laminar airflow is pulled uniformly across the work area to the rear plenum, extracting any airborne particulate away from the operator and into the fan/filter unit or to the clients own dust collection or scrubbing system.
A unique design of crossflow or "side to side" airflow, keeping any airborne particulate away from the operators breathing zone, and therefore providing improved operator protection.
Air is introduced from one of the side plenums at a constant velocity and is then exhausted at the opposite side, passing through filters before being recirculated back into the Booth. This design also provides significant energy savings due to the air being recirculated.
Product Pack-Off Isolators are used when a total containment solution is required. The Sealing Head gives the primary containment and the Isolator enclosure the secondary containment to provide operator protection <1µg/m³.
Laboratory Benches, Solvent Booths & Other Systems
We also have experience in supplying a wide variety of other containment solutions in the form of Benches, Quadraflows, Laminar Flow Booths, Drum Booths, Solvent Booths, Laminar Flow Plenums etc.
Powder Handling Laboratory Benches
A self contained ventilated work enclosure having recirculatory or single pass airflow and a multi stage dust filtration system. Supplied on castors for easy positioning, it comes ready for connection to a three phase power supply. Lights and sockets are already built-in, and containment levels of 10µg/m (task duration) are achievable.
Drum Booths/Solvent Booths
Designed to enclose the work operation and assist in the removal of solvent vapours. Of stainless steel construction with a solid floor (if required) to handle potential solvent spills. Hinged doors and sliding glass windows allow the operator access from outside the Booth.
A recirculatory or single pass airflow unit which gives maximum operator protection during small powder handling operations. The open fronted unit has easy access to the mobile exhaust table, and hinged glass fronts allow full access to the work area for the set up and removal of equipment.
